1. Finding a solution
Media Inkasso were using a central
HP LaserJet 8150 printer with a 2000 sheet input tray to look after output
from Word and from an SQL based client/server application for their process
software. The 50 or so employees had no problem with the high printout
quality and the high printer throughput. But often they would arrive at the
printer looking for a letter, reminder, or a collection notice, and have to
roof through a stock of other statements and reports. The time this took was
not just frustrating, but also highly unproductive.
2. SecureJet, the right
solution
Media Inkasso contacted the HP
dealer who had supplied them with the printer, to see what sort of solutions
were available. Paper handling at the output of the printer was not the
answer, given size of the staff using it, so their dealer put them in touch
with Stethos SystemHaus, a certified German VAR for SecureJet.
SecureJet-SC gives everybody
control of their printouts using a Smartcard and a card reader at the
printer. SecureJet is then primarily intended to stop printouts getting into
the wrong hands. Printouts sent to the printer are stored on the hard-disk
and can only be released by the intended recipient using a PIN code
protected Smartcard.
ln secure applications, the print
job is encoded before leaving the computer, and only decoded as it is being
printed. For Media Inkasso the greatest benefit is the ability to release
print jobs in person, meaning that employees no longer waste their time and
energy sorting through piles of paper.
SecureJet consists of a Windows
driver and a module (with a connection to the SecureJet terminal) that slots
into the printer like a memory expansion. Given its simplicity, the IT staff
at Media Inkasso installed the demo system themselves. The fit to their
requirements was so immediately obvious that they soon proceeded to install
the driver on ail the PCs in the company, and supply the employees with
Smartcards. The increased productivity more than paid for the system in a
short period of lime.
Today when employees at Media
Inkasso print, they do so knowing that instead of waiting to be found in a
pile of paper, their printout waits for them in the printer, and using their
Smartcard is ail it takes to produce just the pages they were looking for.
