Beyond their high
cost, all those unclaimed documents on your printers output tray are
a very critical security leak: any confidential information that
falls into the wrong hands can be detrimental to your company.

Imagine the consequences if
printouts of your human resource or financial documents were whisked
away by an unauthorized employee or a visitor before you can pick
them up at the printer's output tray. The SecureJet Print SMP
modules installed on hp LaserJet printers and MFPs is the solution,
securing both the print jobs data and release.
Intuitive jobs release process

On MFPs, users
press the "My print jobs" front panel button. They are then requested
to authenticate, using one of the built-in authentication or a
SecureJet Authentication module. Upon valid authentication the
users jobs list shows up:

It is also possible for the
administrator to simplify even further the jobs release process,
with two levels:
-
All jobs are released instantly
after a valid authentication, when using the front panel
button. The user then cannot delete or select print jobs, this is
an all-or-nothing function. Authentication can also be used for
other MFP functions.
- All jobs are release instantly
when the user shows his badge to SecureJet Auth-PX,
Auth-SW and Auth-SC authentication agents. The user then
cannot delete or select print jobs, this is an all-or-nothing
function.
This works by switching SecureJet in the "instant release" mode to
work like on printers
(read below). When that mode is activated, the SecureJet
Authentication cannot work with any other MFP function, as it is
dedicated to permanent badge scanning for secure jobs release.
To
release jobs from single function printers, just walk to the printer
and authenticate on the
SecureJet Auth reader or keypad (this depends on the Auth module
installed on the device). All
the user print jobs are instantly released,
there is no need
to go through the printer front panel menu options.
Print Jobs are securely retained
inside hard disk drives

SecureJet Print
SMP is a module running inside the printer or MFP. It provides
secure push printing by storing incoming secure print jobs on the
printer or MFP hard disk drive (printer without HDD need to be
equipped with a hard drive). Nothing will hapen until the owner
walks to the printer and authenticates. His print jobs are then
decrypted on the fly and printed instantly. On MFPs it is even
optionally possible to display the jobs list and select those to
print or delete.
Productivity & security gains
Documents won't be
printed until their owner is facing the printer, waiting for them.
This reduces printing waste, increases documents confidentiality and
lets users reclaim all print jobs in one shot when they need them.
It is also
possible to secure document for another person or department. An
admin can then print a contract that her boss will be able to
release just by walking to a printer or MFP. This is also a great
features for workers without PC or palmtop, such as hospital nurses
(to get prescriptions or lab results), oil rig or factory workers.
Unclaimed print jobs self-delete
Print jobs have an
expiration date after which they are deleted if not printed, defined
in hours and days or as a local time and date.
To fully protect encrypted documents, such deletion happens before any decryption.
Data encryption included
All printer
languages, whether it is Postscript or PCL5, can be viewed on a PC
screen using the right utilities. It means that anybody can see what
you are printing if print jobs data goes unprotected on the network.
To protect your confidential data en-route to the printer/MFP,
Print-SMP comes with sophisticated print job data encryption
capabilities. Every print job has a unique encryption key. This
makes sure the print jobs cannot be rerouted to another device or
archived en-route to the printer or MFP.
Print job
encryption is provided standard in SecureJet Print-SMP.
Encryption plug-ins and filters are available for most Windows OS,
Linux, HP-UX and SUN-Solaris systems.
Smart and dynamic shift-in shift-out of print flow for maximum
throughput
The SecureJet Print-SMP firmware code does stand in the print path
unless needed. It only steps in the print path when encrypted
print jobs need to be decrypted. This ensures the printer prints at
maximum speed for push and pull printing even for very large
unencrypted print jobs, as there is then absolutely no difference in
print performance compared to the same printer without SecureJet.
User authentication
Users may
authenticate on MFPs using any built-in authentication such as LDAP,
Kerberos or Active Directory.
On printers and MFPs, SecureJet Auth modules authenticate using PIN
codes, proximity badges, magnetic swipe cards, smartcard or
biometrics.
Optional roaming pull printing,
with distributed architecture
Your printer is
not available? When SecureJet Print-SMP is combined with the
SecureJet Print-PS server software,
jobs are stored on remote print servers and released from any
printer equipped with Print-SMP. One printer/MFP can query directly
up to 5 SecureJet Print-PS print server, and every SecureJet
Print-PS print server is a gateway to all other servers, providing a
fully scalable distributed architecture.
You can then walk
to any SecureJet-enabled printer or MFP on your Intranet to retrieve
your jobs and jobs sent for you by colleagues.
Driver plug-in on client, server or application
A driver plug-in
is available for client and servers, to secure SMP print jobs. They
perform the link to user, expiration date management and the
encryption. Plug-ins and filters are available for most Windows OS,
Linux, HP-UX and SUN-Solaris systems.
If you write your
own application, on a mainframe, Unix, Linux or other system, you
can secure the delivery of documents by simply adding some commands
in the print job header. All that is fully documented in the
SecureJet Print-SMP manual.
